October is National Physical Therapy Month

Inadequate physical activity results in an added $117 billion in health care costs in the U.S. and leads to reduced quality of life for millions of Americans. As we struggle to address a global pandemic, it’s more important than ever to encourage movement to help people manage pain and other chronic conditions, recover from injuries, and reduce the risk of future injury and chronic disease.

October is National Physical Therapy Month — a time to celebrate the profession and all the ways physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and PT and PTA students help improve lives across the country.

During National Physical Therapy Month in October, the American Physical Therapy Association encourages you to learn about the many benefits of physical activity.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, more than 80% of adults and adolescents do not get enough physical activity.

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants play a critical role in helping Americans of all ages and abilities achieve their physical activity goals, and improve their quality of life.

Make physical activity a priority to:

  • Improve your memory and brain function (all age groups).
  • Protect against many chronic diseases.
  • Aid in weight management.
  • Lower blood pressure and improve heart health.
  • Improve your quality of sleep.
  • Reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
  • Combat cancer-related fatigue.
  • Improve joint pain and stiffness.
  • Maintain muscle strength and balance.
  • Increase life span.

Physical therapists are movement experts who improve quality of life through hands-on care, patient education, and prescribed movement. Physical therapists treat people of all ages and abilities and empower you to take an active part in your care. After an evaluation, your physical therapist will create a treatment plan for your specific needs and goals.
